The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 will be awarding the 2017 Golden Sphinx award to Paris Barclay for his successful career in entertainment and his contributions to the performing arts (see: Grand Sphinx Farkas to Honor Barclay at Gala).

The Hasty Pudding Institute is a historic and prestigious club that began as a social group at Harvard, and a member was required to bring a pot of hasty pudding to each meeting. The organization and grown over two centuries, becoming a well-known philanthropic organization with the goal of fostering the performing arts. They aim to support the underprivileged and young talent at a global level. The Institute includes the oldest social club in the US, a theater group, and a collegiate a cappella group, the Harvard Krokodiloes.

Each year, the Hasty Pudding Institute recognizes a talented individual in the entertainment industry, by bestowing the Order of the Golden Sphinx award for his or her contributions to the performing arts. This award, representing the traditional Golden Sphinx symbol of the Institute, is the highest honor bestowed by the Hasty Pudding Institute.

Paris Barclay will be the 2017 recipient of the Gold Sphinx award. Barclay is currently the President of the Directors Guild of America, and he has an incredible history of producing and directing several successful television shows. He was awarded two Emmy Awards and six Emmy nominations for his involvement in popular series, including GLEE and NYPD BLUE. He also directed episodes of many other popular shows, such as ER, LOST, HOUSE, SCANDAL, and EMPIRE. This is the first year that the award is presented to an individual who was a member of the Hasty Pudding Institute as an undergraduate. Barclay used to sing with the Harvard Krokodiloes, and he also composed two shows for the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. His further achievements and contributions to the performing arts made him an ideal candidate for this prestigious award.

The award will be presented at the annual Order of the Golden Sphinx Gala at the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel on April 3, 2017 in New York City. The Gala will include dinner, a speech by Barclay, and special performances by undergraduate and alumni members of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals and Harvard Krokodiloes.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a MUST on any UAE Excursion

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is poised at the intersection of Asia, Africa, and Europe. While Saadiyat Island, located just off the coast, lies barren. Therefore, in 2006 the UAE government began a drastic change.

On July 8, 2006, the city of Abu Dhabi signed a contract with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to open a world-class art museum on the northwestern tip of Saadiyat Island. The Guggenheim Foundation collects modern art and is responsible for world class art museums in cities such as Venice, New York, and Bilbao. The Island’s Cultural District is intended to showcase some of the best cultural assets in the UAE.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi continues the Foundation’s commitment to locate, collect, and interpret works of modern art. Curators have begun collecting works from the 1960s to present, and they have already acquired several masterpieces such as Otto Piene’s “Hängende Lichtkugel” (Hanging Light Ball). Some of the works were showcased in a special preview at Manarat in 2014.

The construction of its newest museum was halted in 2011. However, it has since resumed, and this 30,000 square meter museum is expected to open in 2017.

The building, designed by Frank Gehry, is a work of art in itself. Its structure brings to mind building blocks and blue cones. It is surrounded on three sides by water, and its location serves as protection for Saadiyat Island’s north beach. Galleries of varying sizes and heights cluster around courtyards, providing a beautiful backdrop to its steadily growing art collection.

Although the city accepts that it won’t become a cultural icon overnight, Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, cultural adviser at the Emirates’ Ministry of Presidential Affairs, says, “We are strategically building museums that in time will train our own people, so we can find our own voice.”

Harvard Hasty Pudding: Not a dessert, but a notorious society

Named for a colonial era dish, the Hasty Pudding Institute is the oldest social club in the United States (and the only collegiate organization of its kind). The club boasts membership of five U.S. presidents and plenty of other notable business and entertainment luminaries, and has lasted since its inception (only being interrupted for four years total due to world wars). Among these preeminent members are Andrew Farkas, managing member, chairman and CEO the successful real estate firm Island Capital Group, LLC. He was president of the club for two years as an undergraduate, and currently serves as Graduate Chairman of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770, which calls Farkas Home its home–which is of course named in honor of a large gift Mr. Farkas gave to the university.

“When I was undergraduate president,” Farkas told the Harvard Crimson shortly after Farkas Hall was named in his honor, “the Pudding was in a tremendous amount of trouble. It was basically broke…I got the Copley Plaza Hotel to give me 900 bottles of champagne for a very, very cheap price,” he continued. “Then I sold tickets…for a gala in honor of the Hasty Pudding.” The ordeal ended up grossing about $35,000.

Farkas’ experience with the Hasty Pudding is but a foreshadow of his determination in the business world. It’s clear that the prestigious club churns out successful alumni–with Farkas, JFK, FDR, Paris Barclay, and Parks and Recreation stars Megan Amram and  Rashida Jones to prove it.

angel art image

We do know artists make their masterpieces out of inspiration. If they do not get inspired, then chances are they cannot produce a masterpiece. End up getting stuck in days, weeks, months or even years before they can get into it. For the aspiring artist out there, you need to make sure that you will be able to get inspiration soon enough in order to create an art to be proud.

Now, you will tell me, “I thought it would just come.” Yes, it does come only if you are eyes are wide open for it. Chances are your brain tends to be thinking or too pre-occupied you cannot even recognize the very fact inspiration is just there.

I would like to help you out on where you can get inspiration of which you can make use of in order to make a masterpiece.

1. Nature.

paint palette imageThis is by far one of the places where you can get inspiration from. It is nature. Seeing the lush green trees and grass makes your brain gets filled up with artistry. The sound of nature, birds chirping, and everything you can see and hear in nature can be a good source of inspiration.

2. Life.

Always remember you are a human being. The experience of a human being can become another source of inspiration for you. Simple things like a baker placing a cake in the oven, a mother carrying her baby with her, or lovers kissing each other under the pouring rain. All these and more will be a good place to get inspired from.

3. Everything you see, hear, taste, smell, and touch.

As an artist you need to be aware of everything that is happening around you. Your five senses should be activated at a much higher level. You need to be able to open yourself on things that people seem to ignore. This is what photographers do when taking a picture. They can take a shot on something as simple as a leaf and make it look marvelous. It is because he sees there is something magical in it that an ordinary person’s eye cannot see.

How to Succeed as an Artist

So, you already have an idea where to get inspiration from. The next thing you need to do is try to look into these places. See for yourself if you can see something, be inspired and transform it into a piece of art. Can you do that?
